This directory has subdirectories which contain data from the FIRE II experiment. These subdirectories contain Altitude vs. Time (RTI) and Cirrus Scan gif pictures created from the University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) and the University of Wisconsin Volume Imaging Lidar (VIL) cirrus scans. The HSRL was located at the Coffeyville airport while the VIL was located approximately 20 km to the South-Southwest of the Coffeyville airport. The cirrus scan gif pictures were created from both VIL scanning directions; an along wind scan and a cross wind scan. RTI's were made from both the VIL and HSRL data. The HSRL RTI's are made for the raw data and the depolarization data. The RTI's for the VIL are synthetic vertical profiles of the cirrus at different distances from the VIL. These vertical profiles simulate vertically pointing lidar systems at those locations. Each directory name is the date when the data was taken. Each date directory has two subdirectories containing the pictures, vil or hsrl. The vil directory also contains two directories: one for the rti gif pictures and the other contains the cirrus scan gif pictures. The hsrl directory contains the RTI raw data gif pictures and the depolarization data gif pictures. |-- rtis |-- vil ---| | |-- scans date ----| | |-- hsrl VIL The file names of the RTI gif pictures are in the following form: MMDDYY_ST_ET_DISTAN.DIR.* where: MM is the Month DD is the Day YY is the Year ST is the Starting Time (CST) of the RTI ET is the Ending Time (CST) of the RTI DISTAN is the Distance away from the VIL DIR is the Direction of the Cross Wind Scan (pos-Northward, neg-Southward) * = clr.gif if the gif picture has a rainbow color scale = .gif if the gif picture has a Black-Brown color scale RTI's are made for every 5 km from the cross wind scan data. (NOTE: when the RTI is further than 30 km, the VIL signal is affected by attenuation and some of the cirrus is no longer detected.) The direction of each cross wind scan is given below where 0 degrees is North and 90 degrees is East. All of the times are Local Time (or CST). For some of the time periods, there were only half scans (only to the north or the south). 11/21/91: 10:34-21:54 180 degrees 22:10-00:00 0 degrees, 180 degrees 11/22/91: 00:00-00:24 0 degrees, 180 degrees 09:06-13:04 160 degrees 11/24/91: 18:25-21:15 0 degrees, 180 degrees 11/25/91: 09:07-14:07 0 degrees, 180 degrees 11/26/91: 13:00-16:07 180 degrees 11/28/91: 09:43-10:37 0 degrees, 180 degrees 12:06-15:05 160 degrees 11/30/91: 08:57-10:22 0 degrees, 180 degrees 12/04/91: 22:07-00:00 0 degrees, 180 degrees 12/05/91: 00:00-06:02 0 degrees, 180 degrees 12:51-13:39 0 degrees, 180 degrees 12/05/91: 14:01-19:11 345 degrees, 165 degrees 12/06/91: 09:00-14:44 0 degrees, 180 degrees The cirrus scan gif pictures show both the along and cross wind variations in the cirrus clouds. Each gif picture contains two images: a cross wind scan and an along wind scan. The top image is typically a north-south scan which is generally across the wind direction. The bottom image is an east-west scan which is generally along the wind. Consecutive pictures have between a 60-75 second separation. For each cirrus scan image, the x-axis is the distance from the VIL and the y-axis is height. The angles of each scan are shown above each image along with the ending time of the scan in CST. The file names of the cirrus scan gif pictures are in the following form: MMDDYY_HHNNSS.scan.gif where: MM is the Month DD is the Day YY is the Year HH is the Hour NN is the Minute SS is the Second The time is the ending time of the along wind scan. The VIL cirrus scans currently available are: 11/21/91: 10:36-10:48 18:13-23:59 11/22/91: 00:00-00:12 09:07-14:07 11/24/91: 18:25-21:14 11/25/91: 09:07-14:07 ** 11/26/91: 13:00-16:07 11/28/91: 09:43-10:37 12:06-15:05 11/30/91: 08:57-10:22 12/04/91: 22:07-23:59 12/05/91: 00:00-06:02 14:02-18:26 12/06/91: 09:13-12:41 All times are in CST. ** During this time period the VIL had some alignment errors. This is seen in the slope of the cirrus cloud as the distance from the VIL increased. HSRL All times are in GMT.
