GEWEX-RFA Data Set Description ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Project Title: GEWEX-RFA ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Data product name: CAVE_Ed003 1) Contact for scientific questions about data Name: David Rutan Institution: AS&M E-mail address: david.a.rutan@nasa.gov Telephone: 757-827-4629 Fax: 757-825-8659 2) What is the name of the original archived data set from which this GEWEX-RFA subset was produced? CERES ARM Validation Experiment (CAVE) 3) Is the original archived data set currently available from another data center or web site? If so, please list addresses or URLs: All 15 minute files are available as Surface/Aerosol/Meteorology (SAM) files at: http://www-cave.larc.nasa.gov/cave/ Original minute data can be found for each surface site as outlined below. (Items of interest: input data streams, name of algorithm used to produce data, start and end time of data, gaps in spatial or temporal coverage, and data quality issues, etc.). Data are originally downloaded for validation of radiation transfer model estimates of surface broadband fluxes calculated by the Surface and Atmospheric Radiation Budget (SARB) group which is part NASA's Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project. At any given surface site a maximum of seven variables is possible as listed below, though many sites do not include all seven observations. ALWDN ALWUP ASWDHEM ASWUP ASWDIR ASWDIF ASWDN After initial download, data are subsequently re-organized, averaged to 15 minute intervals and placed into the CERES/ARM Validation Experiment (CAVE) where similar, (though more compact files) can be found at: http://www-cave.larc.nasa.gov/cave Data are for the year 2004. Each individual file contains 15 minute averages for one variable for one year of data. Original data have temporal resolution of 1 or 3 minutes. A minimum of 7 or 6 minutes was required for a 15 minute average to be included in these time series. There was no filling of data gaps. GIF images are provided for each file but the image is of the annual mean diurnal cycle for that site for that variable. The annual mean diurnal cycle is calculated directly from the data provided. 5) History of updates and changes. If you resubmit a new version of any part of this data product to GEWEX-RFA, please use this space to record the reasons for the new submission (i.e., fixed error in ___ parameter; changed to area-weighted spatial averaging, etc.) Please specify the parameter(s) affected, new RFA number(s), and the date of the change. 6) Please provide a list of publications and journal articles pertaining to these data (if any); or a link to a bibliography for the product. Links to the original data sources are listed above in #3) 7) If you would like a specific citation or acknowlegment when these data are used in a publication, please provide that here: If these data are used in a publication proper citation should be given, though one need only reference the site data used. For example if only ARM data is used then use only the ARM acknowledgment in the article, along with the CAVE reference (#5). When using ARM data for publication make this acknowledgement: (1) ARM data is made available through the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program. When using BSRN data for publication this reference is to be quoted: (2) Ohmura A., E. Dutton, B. Forgan, C. Frohlich, H. Gilgen, H. Hegne, A., Heimo, G., Konig-Langlo, B. McArthur, G. Muller, R. Soc., Vol. 79, No. 10, 2115-2136. (3) When using GMD(CMDL) data for publication make this acknowledgement: CMDL data is made available through the NOAA/CMDL Solar and Thermal Radiation. (STAR) group. (4) When using SURFRAD data for publication make this acknowledgement: SURFRAD data is made available through NOAA Air Resources Laboratory/Surface Radiation Research Branch. and quote this reference: Augustine, J.
