NARSTO 1998 Model-Intercomparison Study Verification Data September 15, 1998 Data prepared by the Quality System Science Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research, Environmental Sciences Division. DATA DESCRIPTION SPATIAL CHARACTERISTICS Data are provided from seven sources that collectively comprise 559 surface stations from sixteen northeastern U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Location information for each station is contained in the companion site data file. TEMPORAL CHARACTERISTICS Hourly-averaged measurements are provided covering the period May 1- September 30, 1995. Daily maximum surface ozone values are provided covering the period June 1 - September 30, 1995. DATA FILE NAMES & CONTENT The four data files described here support the NARSTO Model Intercomparison activity described in the report of a workshop that was held in Washington, DC on May 27-28, 1998. The intercomparison activity will compare meteorological, emissions, and air quality models that are used to estimate ozone concentrations in the northeastern United States. The air quality models are used to estimate how ambient ozone concentrations will change in response to changes in VOC and NOx emissions. These data are a subset of the measurements made during the NARSTO-Northeast 1995 intensive field campaign and will be used to verify model predictions. Included are surface one-hour average O3 and nitrogen-related (NO, NOX, NOY, and NO2) measurement results from all reporting sources for 1995. ASCII data files are available for specific time intervals and the full monitoring period. A measurement station description file is included for both data types. Hourly Average Surface Data 1. 95ne_may1_sep30.dat Contains hourly-averaged ozone and nitrogen-related (NO, NOX, NOY, and NO2) data from 559 stations in the northeastern United States for the period May 1 - September 30, 1995. The file is sorted by date (i.e., all data for May 1 followed by all station data for May 2, etc.). 2. 95ne_jul1_aug5.dat Contains hourly-averaged ozone and nitrogen-related (NO, NOX, NOY, and NO2) data from stations in the northeastern United States for the period July 1 - August 5, 1995. The file is sorted by date. 3. 95ne_jul10_jul18.dat Contains hourly-averaged ozone and nitrogen-related (NO, NOX, NOY, and NO2) data from stations in the northeastern United States for the period July 10 - July 18, 1995. The file is sorted by date. 4. 95ne_site.dat Contains site information including station identification number, station name, state abbreviation, contributing source network abbreviation (e.g., AI=EPA AIRS), station location coordinates, elevation, and a description of the site for the 559 stations for which data are provided. All records provided in these files have a value of "1". According to the NARSTO-NE Data Management Plan, level 1 indicates a complete data set of specified quality that have undergone internal consistency checks. Selected sets of external data, such as data from the EPA AIRS, have been included in the NARSTO-NE data archive as level 1 data. This code does not reflect the results of checks performed by the ORNL Quality System Science Center (QSSC) and users should be aware that certain entries are subject to change following completion of the ORNL QSSC data evaluation. If users discover errors in the data files or suspect values may be erroneous or improperly flagged PLEASE notify the QSSC. STNID Char 14 Fourteen-character field contains the station identifier.
